A: Colorful toys help to stimulate baby’s eyesight and engage them in play. High-contrast toys, such as toys with lots of different animals, help your child to switch focus. By pointing out the colors, and talking about the different animals, your baby will learn to follow along with you, rather than staying fixed on one subject. They might not understand the meaning of your words yet, or be able to differentiate between the animals fully, but they’ll develop the mental capacity to change tracks. Deceptively simple concepts and toys can still have a huge impact on your child’s learning to assess and functionally interact with the world around them.

For more casual, in-the-moment drawing, try these twisty crayons, whose shape makes it easier for kids to grip them. “Drawing starts teaching things like symbolic activity, even with scribbles,” Dr. Golinkoff says. “You might think that what comes out is mush, but they’re starting to have intent, and they have enough control to put dashes on the paper. Imagine how cool it is to be a 2-year-old and actually put something on a piece of paper and see art emerge on the other end.”

“There’s actually been some research looking at kids using blocks with parents and it turns out that building blocks are a really good way to promote early STEM and math skills,” says Lytle. “Think about the language you’re using when you’re building blocks: bigger, smaller, shorter, taller. If you have kids and parents building bridges with blocks together, you’ll start talking about concepts like stability. Even if you don’t actually use the word stability, you’re still talking about complex engineering concepts.” The pastel-hued wooden building blocks in this 14-piece set have built-in magnets, so they won’t fall down as easily as regular blocks. Plus, they’re made in Honduras, with the goal of creating living-wage jobs for Tegucigalpa residents.

We encourage parents to do their own extensive research since many teething toys out there do still contain some trace levels of BPA. Even some of the cooling gels and agents used on some products to aid in relief may leak after extensive use or improper treatment. It can be a lengthy process, but your child’s health is always worth it. Also, as part of our evaluation and suggestion to parents, don’t look for a quick and easy–or cheap–fixes! The more you do this, the more likely you are to get a product with toxins, or a product that peels and is a choking hazard. Even something like food- and medical-grade silicone can be deceptive.

Especially suitable for kids who are experiencing or otherwise coming into contact with the healthcare system, doctor’s kits are also just plain fun. These blocks are amazing and are on our toy gift wish list!  They might look like ordinary wooden blocks…but they stick together because they are magnetic!  The magnets are placed inside the wood, an important safety feature.  The manufacturer says they are appropriate for children 6 months+, but I would still be hesitant to use the smallest cubes with toddlers who still put toys in their mouth.  The only bad thing about these blocks is that they are pretty pricey.  They are extremely well-made, however, and would last for years to come.

A: There is so much controversy around the use of plastic these days. In recent years, we’ve seen how its chemical make-up has had some undesirable effects on our health, not to mention our planet. We highly recommend using silicone-based toys as they are FDA-approved, better for the environment and may be safer and less harsh for your baby’s delicate, growing body.

What do 1-year-olds even do these days? “You’re looking for toys that’ll help this particular child develop,” says Dr. Sarah Roseberry Lytle, director of outreach and education at the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences. “They’re starting to explore complex concepts like gravity through trial and error and trying new things, oftentimes repetitively, just to figure out how the world works,” so you want toys that allow for some experimentation.

This is our first criteria for anything that goes in a baby’s mouth. Having said that, “contaminant-free” can mean different things, depending on standards and regulations from various consumer safety agencies within, and outside of the United States. We’ve tried to be as helpful as possible by stating each product’s non-contaminants policy, but we did make sure to select baby products that are BPA-free. Most of our picks are also free of contaminants like phthalates, PVC, lead, and latex. Some even go so far as to avoid petroleum, which is admirable. However, being completely free of any and all toxins is virtually impossible.

The Wonder Crew Buddies are fantastic new action dolls. They merge action figures with the doll and stuffed animal play. Now kids get the best of both worlds – action, empathy, and nurturing play. Since younger babies can't exactly wander over to the toy bins and pick out something that catches their eye, it falls to you to select playthings that give baby the chance to practice and refine new skills. Don’t know where to start? Don’t worry. Read on to get age-appropriate play ideas and learn about the best developmental toys for babies at every age and stage.
While newborns are notorious for packing their schedules with only a handful of activities—namely sleeping, eating, and pooping—at around three months you will start to notice a marked change in your baby. At around that time babies tend to spend a bit more time awake, they notice more about their surroundings, they’re better able to hold things in their hands, and you might even hear those first coos and giggles.

From my personal experience as a mom of three, I have found that learning animal sounds as a young toddler is a huge stepping stone to language development.  Once my children started saying animal sounds, they quickly began saying many other words as well.  We have a farm set nearly identical to this one and it has been a favorite toy for all three of my kids!
What's better than a virtual world designed for kids to grow intellectually? This tablet will adapt to your kid's learning level by adjusting the skill level for the different games and activities offered in the form of apps! New challenges will appear as your little brainiac hits mental milestones. Plus, we love the shatterproof screen for slippery fingers and tantrum throwers.
It is even shown that teething toys and pacifiers have been helpful in speech and auditory development. This all has to do with the movement and placement of the infant’s tongue. What a child has in his or her mouth effects what sounds they are able to perceive–discerning each vowel and consonant that comes in more distinctively than older children and adults.
“Shape sorters are my No. 1 favorite 2-year-old toy,” Dr. Golinkoff says. “They love them because they’re just starting to pay attention to things like shapes and colors, and they can hold things, and they love shoving things through holes. They can put things in, take things out. It’s just got it all.” This one, in pleasantly muted and pastel colors, also has a sound for each corresponding shape.

Toy shopping can be similar. The makers of baby products can slap an "educational" or "developmental" label on their toys without oversight and certainly without any research or evidence to support their claims. And you may be surprised to find that many of the most popular toys on the market aren't the most beneficial for development. Luckily, most baby toys aren't harmful, per se, but there are certainly some that are more developmentally helpful for our kiddos than others.

Is your child asking for a pet? Little Wrapples are wearable plush figures that kids wear around thier wrists like a slap bracelet. With light up eyes, it makes over 40 different sounds including purring, giggling, and singing. Not only can they talk to you, they can talk to other Wrapples if your friend has one. Turn them upside down and they go to sleep. They come in 4 different varieties.

If your child is itching to pick up a new instrument, but you're not sure if you have the time or cash to shell out for lessons, bring home this quality keyboard. It functions just like a regular piano keyboard, but it also features the ability to teach your child new music by connecting to an app. The keys will light up and show your kid how to play songs. It's entertaining and will leave your kid with music skill to last a lifetime.  If the skill really takes off, bring home this 88-key piano keyboard that teaches music in the same way.
The Scrubbie pets are colorable and washable pets figures that kids can customize over and over again thanks to the washable Scribble Scrubbie Crayola markers. This 2-pack version conveniently comes in two different flavor/sensations!  There is the soft and chewy red raspberry version for a lighter gum massage with little pressure; or, the harder dark chocolate version of this cookie teether!  Both are designed so each ridge and floral pattern on the cookie has a different firmness of texture or “bite” to it.  It has a detachable cord that nursing mothers can wear around their neck, or simply hang within reach of their child when needed.
This toddler toy gets played with at our house every single day.  Because of the cylinder shape, it is an activity that parents should participate in as little ones will get frustrated if it keeps rolling away while they are trying to put the shape in the correct spot.  I actually consider this to be a positive aspect of this toy, as it gives me the opportunity to talk about the various shapes and colors.  I debated between this one and the Melissa & Doug Shape Sorting cube, but decided against the cube after reading many negative reviews.
Among our picks for toddler Christmas gifts, consider this the perfect multi-purpose toy. It’ll give little ones practice counting and recognizing numbers and colors. Each pop shows a number of dots, while the cover shows the numeral and color. Plus, as your toddler slides the covers on and off, his fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination get a boost.
They’re going to love playing ‘parent’ with this new interactive doll!  They can feed her, change her, love her and more!  She’ll give them over 80 super real expressions and cute little sounds. They can help put her to sleep by rocking her, she’ll laugh when you tickle her, and she’ll even turn to you when you call her!  She’ll even provide you with some of her very own sweet baby babble too when you talk to her.  We personally think this one is the cutest, but you can also get her with blonde sculpted hair or brown sculpted hair too!
This is a good little ride for a baby who can sit up with complete control and is at least very close to crawling. You will need to closely supervise to ensure safety, but the action of rocking back and forth for a baby is their version of a wild roller coaster and the look on his face when he’s riding will have you convinced you’re the best gift-giver in the world.
2. Supporting of discovery and exploration : Children are natural-born experimenters. Play for bigger babies, toddlers and beyond often involves lots of "what happens if I do this?!" moments. Look for toys that could respond differently to your child's different actions or toys with pieces that could be removed and used with different activities. This goes right along with open-endedness since these are key features of open-ended toys.
If your child is itching to pick up a new instrument, but you're not sure if you have the time or cash to shell out for lessons, bring home this quality 61-key keyboard. It functions just like a regular piano keyboard, but it also features the ability to teach your child new music by connecting to an app. The keys will light up and show your kid how to play songs.

Between 4 and 7 months, baby is working on sitting independently. If she's still sitting with support, you can encourage her to strengthen her trunk muscles (abs and spine) by putting toys in front of her and encouraging her to reach for them. Once baby can sit without needing to put her hands in front of her (called "tripoding"), she'll be free to use those hands to play with toys and, hopefully, entertain herself for short periods of time (but remember, never leave baby unattended).
When your baby hits the 3-month mark, you'll start to notice a spike in curiosity. Whereas your newborn was content resting in your arms or hanging on a boppy, your infant now wants to play with toys. The best infant toys, however, are more than just loads of fun — they help your baby learn and grow (and the more colorful, interactive, and developmentally appropriate they are, the better.)

Lastly, communicative skills milestones become achievable for this toddler phase. The toddler should be able to be understood more clearly and learns how to use proper pronouns to express concepts such as ownership and identity. Once they are three, the milestone of being able to speak hundreds of words plus understand instructions and directions that involve multiple steps should be the achieved. This gives an easy to path to the development of friendships. The milestone of understanding and developing friendships, expressing and using their emotions in social settings and how to interact properly with different kinds of toddlers and people in general will be achieved.
This toy engages baby in many ways and stimulates it’s senses. It introduces baby with familiar sound, melodies, colors and numbers in three different languages: English, Spanish and French. It helps to develop motor skills by pressing different buttons, flipping book pages and rotating a ball with rattle beads. There are also lights and drumming sounds that rewards baby.
