Here are wooden pegs and rings to mix and match in every variation. “I think this kind of stuff is fun. Children love stacking things because they want to make things bigger, as big as themselves,” she says. “Whenever kids find something they can do and it’s a little bit of a struggle, but not a huge struggle, that’s the key. It’s just a little bit hard to put those pegs in the holes. That builds some fine motor coordination.”

There are some babies who just love to ride in the car. They sleep easily in their car seat, they watch the cars zoom by, and they don’t fuss. But if your kid is not one of those kids, this gift may make your (and baby’s) life easier. If you secure this to the baby’s car seat, boredom will not strike nearly as quickly or as hard. You can use rings to secure favorite toys or allow baby to play with the toys attached to its bar. And when you decide to take baby with you into the mall, you can easily remove it and secure to the stroller and placate baby there, as well.

Some research suggests simply some TLC as a form of relief to trade off extensive use of teethers. Simply holding your child, speaking to them, rocking them when fussy, or the gentle pressure of your finger in their mouth and on their gums can be more than enough in conjunction with the teething toys. By far it will make this first transition much simpler and smoother.

Luckily, we have evolved more as a society and tend to avoid giving our children toxins as we did in the past!  As with many things that have come to light, we can now see teething as an integral learning phase for both parents and children. Not only do teething toys help to alleviate gum pain, but the pressure also aids in strengthening the incoming teeth….this is one of the reasons that it is so vital to finding a teething toy which can also reach the back molars as well as the front teeth coming in!
Interactive features include: Open and close refrigerator and oven with lights and phrases, whoosh sound when the toilet seat is lifted, a music player with four fun songs, peek-a-boo kitty or pop-up weather report and an alarm clock to help Emma wake up. “A cape is a blank slate,” says Dr. Cornett, “a kid can use it to be royalty or a superhero or just as a blanket.” Again, you want to stay away from existent superhero logos to allow the maximum freedom for your kid. We dig this Lynda Sutton DIY Drawing Superhero Cape, which comes with a matching mask and, most importantly, can be washed after a hard day of superheroing.
At the end of the day, however, social interaction between children and parents is really the most important thing to remember. “Even if you’re laying the foundation for later cognitive development, all learning happens in relationships,” she says. “Spend as much time as you can with your child to make that time as uninterrupted and undistracted as possible.” To help you parse what that means (and to make sure you’re first in line as the friend-aunt of choice), we’ve asked the parenting team over at PopSugar Moms to pick out the grooviest age-appropriate toys on the market, with Lytle explaining what makes them the best gift for a 1-year-old specifically. We’ve also made a few additional selections based on what Lytle had to say. We’ve also got gift guides for kids of all ages, including 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, 4-year-olds, 5-year-olds, 7-year-olds, 8-year-olds, and 9-year-olds.

There you have it. Blocks, balls, and cups -- unsung superheroes of the toy world. So what's their secret? Some experts believe that convergent playthings (with only one purpose, such as puzzles) encourage children to seek out the one correct answer while divergent playthings (with more than one purpose) guide children to many approaches, helping them understand that some problems have many solutions. That must be why kids go back to these toys again and again. They'll never be the must-have toys of the moment, but they won't be forgotten tomorrow either.

“Babies love looking at faces of other babies,” said Nina Lindsay, president of the Association for Library Service to Children, adding that it’s particularly important to look for diverse faces because kids learn bias from a very young age. “It’s really important for all children to see children like themselves and different from themselves in books on a regular basis.”
You may wonder why we need to have baby teeth only to have them replaced by more permanent ones. Well, it’s all about developing the oral cavity of your baby. You see, it is your baby’s milk teeth that will maintain the arch length of his or her jaw. This is crucial because it is in these same places where their permanent teeth will develop. Milk teeth serve to guide the eruption pathway of your baby’s permanent teeth. It also helps in the formation and development of the jaw bones and muscles.

This is one of the newest (and best-selling) games so far in 2018.  In fact, it’s one of Kickstarter’s 50 most backed projects of all time.  Pretty impressive.  This super fun/crazy unicorn-based game is for the older kids.  They say 14+, but plenty of parents who’ve reviewed and played feel like 10-12+ was perfectly fine.  Either way, the goal is to build your own unicorn army (mainly by betraying your friends).  Be the first to to build the army of 7 unicorns and win this strategic card game!

If there is probable cause that a toddler could have a developmental delay or developmental disability, a trained, certified specialist can give a proper evaluation (in some cases, more than one) to get a good idea of what could possibly be wrong. This can help direct the parent to proper organizations, services and support groups that can help to educate and function through this experience.
At 12 months, children are learning about patterns in the world, which also extends to routines. Predictable routines, like ones at nighttime, for example, “both help them feel very safe and secure, but also help them learn about the world and learn what to expect next,” says Lytle. This feeling of security also applies to loveys, because at this age, children are capable of forming some type of relationship with nonhumans, even characters on a favorite show. A familiar doll or toy can add an element of predictability in a situation that may be foreign. “Objects and dolls can’t respond to the child, but it is something that makes them feel secure,” she adds. Even if they don’t know what is going on around them, they will feel safe knowing that they have their favorite toy in their arms. Try this fox Sshlumpie, which is not only a cuddly companion for a 1-year-old but also a great lovey that can be taken on the go — and to sleep.
The Pai Circuit Conductor set is an interesting new STEM set demonstrating simple circuitry. It allows budding engineers to build circuits by snapping pieces together and powering on lights or decorative fiber optics. After building your circuit, you can control the flow of electricity using physical buttons. The companion app allows kids to visually see the flow of electricity. This set teaches electricity, cause-and-effect, and magnetism.

Every weapon will be able to spin and move like its real-life counterpart.
Play gives children the chance to practice new skills over and over again. Toys that give kids a chance to figure something out on their own—or with a little coaching—build their logical thinking skills and help them become persistent problem-solvers. They also help children develop spatial relations skills (understanding how things fit together), hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skills (using the small muscles in the hands and fingers).

Our church has a set of these Magna-Tiles and my kids love them.  Technically the manufacturer only recommends these toys for 3 years and older, but I would be comfortable letting my nearly 2-year old use them as long as she was being supervised.  Magnets as toys can be extremely dangerous so please use extreme caution and vigilance with children who still put things in their mouths.
“One-year-olds are starting to notice routines and patterns in the world around them, so to the extent a 1-year-old is getting into a car or taxi and going somewhere,” explains Lytle, “that’s a fairly basic routine that they might like to role-play with toys that reflect their experience.” They might appreciate this Taxi Push Toy by Manny and Simon, which is known for its ecoconscious, American-made toys. It’s perfect for city babies who’ll learn how to hail a taxi before they can speak a full sentence.
Babies are learning new skills every day, as they are soon quickly motivated to interact with people and their environment. The best toys for infants help babies learn to develop attention, hand-eye coordination, motor skills for rolling and crawling. Many baby toys excite babies and encourage them to babble and speak their first words. Parents do a lot of research on the  best baby toys in order to find ways to offer their children ways to learn during playtime.

It’s a relaxing and fun experience that offers something different than Mario. This little puzzle game is perfectly suited for the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo 3DS.

Toys that toddlers can push, pull, and ride on boost balance, improve coordination, and encourage active play. Look for toys that your toddler can ride on by themselves that also have a handle for you to push when their little legs get tired. For toddlers who are still learning to walk, something they can push or ride lets them practice both skills.

It’s an old-fashioned jack-in-the-box, except instead of a creepy clown, it’s an adorable Curious George! It also happens to play “Pop Goes the Weasel.” “This deals with the concept of object permanence, meaning that even though you can’t see the toy that’s in the box, it still exists,” says Lytle. “Kids start picking up on this idea when they’re 1, and they continue learning it throughout childhood. Toys that surprise children are interesting because they appeal to a 1-year-old’s understanding of routine and patterns, and they’re always fun and playful. But if you have a child that will have a very strong, scared reaction, this is perhaps not the best toy for them.”
Based on events in Sons of Garmadon series, Temple of Resurrection features architecture and styling that will be familiar to long-time fans. Next you must account for all the obvious hazards in the play area, such as electrical outlets, into which covers must be inserted when not in use. Watch out for electrical cords as well, which can present multiple dangers at the same time, namely a strangulation hazard, a risk or shock should the cord be cut or torn (or bitten), as well as the chance for injury should a lamp or other object be pulled down atop a youngster. All electrical cords should be tucked out of the way and/or secured to the wall or floor. Also watch out for any other objects that could fall down onto a child -- this includes heavy books.

Which will engage your child’s interest for more than a few days or weeks? Blending digital and physical play, the Merge 6DoF blaster immerses you in the game using just your phone and a blaster accessory. It delivers six degrees of freedom, meaning it tracks your position and orientation so when you move, it moves. It’s something you have to experience. The tracking felt surprisingly accurate, and it was a pure blast to play without any heavy headsets or cumbersome wires. There are many AR toys, but hands-down, it’s the best VR/AR toy we have seen and our Toy of the Show.

Some experts believe that listening to classical music can do a world of good for your baby, including making your baby smarter and happier. As if that isn’t good enough reason to add a little classical listening to your baby’s playlist, think about what a nice change of pace a little classical music will be from the usual “The Wheels on the Bus” and “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” that you likely have on heavy rotation.

Babies get so cold during their first year of baths. And while there’s nothing cuter than a baby fresh from a bath squirming in a big fluffy towel, baby being unnecessarily chilly for the sake of cuteness just doesn’t settle with us. If you want to keep your baby warm as you dry and dress him, this hooded towel is a great option. It will keep baby’s head warm while dressing the rest of him until you can dry and brush hair or get a hat on him.

You can use rings to secure favorite toys or allow baby to play with the toys attached to its bar. And when you decide to take baby with you into the mall, you can easily remove it and secure to the stroller and placate baby there, as well.

No two toddlers are the same; all toddlers developed at different speeds in different ways. Just because your neighbor’s toddler entered toddler phase two when they were a year-old doesn’t mean your toddler is behind the times. However, there are times when a toddler can take too long to develop and it can cause concern for possible developmental issues developing.

You know how I love the idea of this kind of gift. Instead of getting a gift for your newborn who is happy to stare at jingling keys, why not get them something that will save kids in other countries? Some people may not like the “no gift to open” factor on this one, but some may love the gesture this brings. (For more gifts along this line, check out my Baby Gifts That Give Back post.)
