The first phase of block play is what MacDonald terms "tote and carry." Your 2-year-old is doing little or no building, but she can pile, haul, and drop -- and in the process learn about weight, stability, and balance. Of course a toddler's favorite lesson will probably be the noisiest and messiest: gravity. To the outrage of many an older sibling, toddlers learn quickly that what goes up must come down -- and that knocking down blocks brings an exciting reward. "Children like order and structure, but at a young age they love to create chaos even more," says MacDonald. "Just by stacking one block on top of another, they learn that unstable things fall down, while stable things don't."

At 12 months, children are learning about patterns in the world, which also extends to routines. Predictable routines, like ones at nighttime, for example, “both help them feel very safe and secure, but also help them learn about the world and learn what to expect next,” says Lytle. This feeling of security also applies to loveys, because at this age, children are capable of forming some type of relationship with nonhumans, even characters on a favorite show. A familiar doll or toy can add an element of predictability in a situation that may be foreign. “Objects and dolls can’t respond to the child, but it is something that makes them feel secure,” she adds. Even if they don’t know what is going on around them, they will feel safe knowing that they have their favorite toy in their arms. Try this fox Sshlumpie, which is not only a cuddly companion for a 1-year-old but also a great lovey that can be taken on the go — and to sleep.

Interacting with the fish tank reveals a gift shop for get-well gifts, such as a teddy or heart balloon. The exam room is perfect for medical emergencies or check-ups. Here you can even reveal two x-rays. Accessories include a medical bag, stethoscope, arm cast, leg cast, blood pressure machine, and more to enhance your play experience.
Why we love it: It's small enough to tuck into your changing bag but the Whoozit's BIG on baby entertainment – with loads of differently patterned and textured fabrics to see, touch and feel, and a little mirror hidden behind his nose. Our tester Marley's mum loved the dangling legs and the little Velcro strap that lets you attach the toy to your baby's car seat or pushchair.
This toy is for a big baby who is steady on his feet and able to hold a sitting posture. They even recommend the ages of 3 to 8 for its use. But if you are providing direct involvement with baby, this can provide a lot of fun for him and he’ll age into it nicely. It requires no pushing or batteries; its mechanical operation will allow your baby (or you, until baby can figure it out on his own) to operate this car by simply turning the wheel. And it’s durable enough that the manufacturer even suggests the parent hop on to try it out themselves.
Tegu Magnetic Blocks – Tegu blocks are one of a kind. They are magnetic blocks, which make building more fun! They feel amazing and kids of all ages will love playing with these. Now, why do we need a teething toy? Well, remember the baby teeth will be breaking out of the gums which can lead to inflammation, causing soreness, swelling, and even some pain. Teething toys serve to relieve the pressure off your baby’s gums. This helps them feel a lot better during the whole teething process. And since we are talking about babies, it is often a lot better to use a teething toy that can also help develop their other senses as well as psychomotor skills. This way, we are tending to the overall development of our babies.
Can you keep a “sea”-cret? From the creators of Exploding Kittens comes a new board game called You’ve Got Grabs. This is a family-friendly game for kids over 7. Played in teams of two, this game combines crabs with deception. The game is super simple: Before starting, you and your teammate must come up with a secret signal. You must collect 4 of the same card and secretly notify your partner. Your teammate must then yell, “You’ve got crabs!” The catch? If the other team finds out and yells “You’ve Got Crabs” your team loses.
Everything about babies is so exciting, but when it comes to toys that’s when shopping really gets fun. However, every toy is not ideal for babies and it’s hard to know which toys are developmentally appropriate, fun and safe for infants. At Fat Brain Toys, we know there is a smarter way to play when it comes to toys for babies. We collected data on the most popular baby toys as well as the toys our customers purchase frequently to target the best baby toys for 2018. Since we understand babies explore with their mouths, we make certain the toys that make our best of list are completely safe for babies. So, parents, caregivers, friends and relatives can feel god about choosing a toy from our top baby toys of the year.

Toy vehicles provide kids with a mobile aspect of play that’s fascinating. Toddlers are drawn to anything with wheels or that moves on its own. There are plenty of vehicle options, from trucks that help with digging to cars that transport dolls, so you’re sure to find one that your tot will love. Just avoid cars that have small or loose parts that could be a choking hazard.

Welp, Christmas is just around the corner (hooray?) and your kids are already asking for everything under the sun, so we’ve narrowed down their toy demands to the ones that are the most popular and must-haves of the 2018 season.  Why not stay on-trend and ahead of the curve all at the same time? Plus, if you’re running out of ideas on what toys to gift them this season (just in case you’re totally over giving them all kinds of candy), their birthday (geesh didn’t they just have one of those?!) or just want to pick them up a little something for no reason at all, we’ve got you covered.

Another obvious hazard to be confronted are sharp corners. These are present on desks, tables, chairs, and more and can lead to serious injuries. Use padding to soften the edges and angles of furniture and, when needed, simply move a given piece of furniture out of the area. Watch out for loose carpets, especially if they are set on hard flooring. Carpets can create a tripping hazard when an edge rolls up, and they can slide underfoot when on a smooth surface. You can use a high friction pad under the carpet to prevent it from bunching or sliding and to help absorb the impact if and when a child does topple over.
The LEGO Technic Racing Yacht is an impressive 2-in-1 set that many fans have been looking forward to for a while. It features a bright color scheme and looks very interesting indeed. It has a rather interesting pivoting action steering wheel. What’s cool? You can even steer the steering wheel and it all feel very smooth. The two winches actually are functional. Overall, the lines, colors, and mechanisms all look and feel great. There’s a great amount of detail, given that the set only uses 330 pieces in the build.
Next look for toys that are free of potentially harmful materials such as lead, BPA, phthalates, and other dangerous chemicals and compounds. Reading all labels and literature that accompany a toy should be enough to figure out whether or not the toy meets your standards, and be on the lookout for words like "organic" and "nontoxic." Also check the place of manufacture of a product and be aware of inexpensive imports, which may not be entirely trustworthy in their labeling.

A: Quite a few of these teethers do work wonders for older kids with oral motor problems. They’ve even been known to calm down children with the developmental disorder when they act out at home or in public. Of course, you should always get your doctor or therapist’s approval beforehand. Kids with autism, for example, may need a really thick, meaty chew to calm them down when they’re at peak frustration levels. In such cases, it’s nice to have different chewing levels to fit your child’s needs.

These blocks are amazing and are on our toy gift wish list!  They might look like ordinary wooden blocks…but they stick together because they are magnetic!  The magnets are placed inside the wood, an important safety feature.  The manufacturer says they are appropriate for children 6 months+, but I would still be hesitant to use the smallest cubes with toddlers who still put toys in their mouth.  The only bad thing about these blocks is that they are pretty pricey.  They are extremely well-made, however, and would last for years to come.

Using gestures and motions, you can ‘cast’ 11 different spells. What’s cool? You can even challenge other aspiring wizards. One mode is like laser tag, but magical. There are 5 modes of play. Hot Wheels is known for its physical play, but now it is blending the physical and virtual world with Augmoto. Augmoto adds AR on top of a classic Hot Wheels race track. In order to race your opponent around the track, players have to complete mini games using an app. For example, players can earn missile attacks, which can be used to slow down your opponent. The AR component adds a strategic element to the classic Hot Wheels track, making it feel more like a video game.

Do not blame yourself if your toddler does develop a delay or disability. It doesn’t make the toddler any less intelligent nor does it mean they are destined for a life of mediocrity. However, while you shouldn’t stress out over it, neglecting or refusing to accept that your toddler does have a delay or disability could hinder them in the years to come. Just like it’s best to start the nurturing of developmental milestones early, it’s best to start the nurturing of delay and disability healing early as well.

Most times when you’re buying a gift for baby, you’re actually buying a gift for the new mom and dad that will be pleased and baby will like (or at least benefit from). And that makes gift giving a bit more tricky. Even if you don’t get something from our list, though, do the parent a favor and adhere to the recommended age of any toy you get, especially if that parent is you. Storing a gift for years is no fun.
Love hatch and play surprises? Launching this fall the Jurassic World Hatch ‘N Play Dinos Assortment brings the hatching fun to life with cute Jurassic World baby dinos that hatch from eggs. Who will you hatch? Each egg will feature a unique dinosaur species and each figure will have a special feature unique to its species. What’s cool? Kids can have endless hatching fun and the eggs can also be used to store your baby dinos.
You know how I love the idea of this kind of gift. Instead of getting a gift for your newborn who is happy to stare at jingling keys, why not get them something that will save kids in other countries? Some people may not like the “no gift to open” factor on this one, but some may love the gesture this brings. (For more gifts along this line, check out my Baby Gifts That Give Back post.)
