Lastly, communicative skills milestones become achievable for this toddler phase. The toddler should be able to be understood more clearly and learns how to use proper pronouns to express concepts such as ownership and identity. Once they are three, the milestone of being able to speak hundreds of words plus understand instructions and directions that involve multiple steps should be the achieved. This gives an easy to path to the development of friendships. The milestone of understanding and developing friendships, expressing and using their emotions in social settings and how to interact properly with different kinds of toddlers and people in general will be achieved.
Baby’s First Blocks are about as straightforward as toys come. There are 10 colorful blocks in five different shapes, and the box has a sorting lid where little ones can drop the pieces through, improving their problem-solving skills. The blocks can be stacked on their own to create teetering towers, and the container's easy-carry handle lets toddlers bring the toy wherever they go. Overall, Baby’s First Blocks are simple, enjoyable, and a childhood staple!
Nothing comes more naturally for a child than to chew on his or her blankie or pillow!  It was the original chew toy before there even was a chew toy!  It’s convenient because there’s no worry of slippage or of it falling.  Baby can crawl around with it, sit with it, lay with it -- all within reach of hands and mouth!  The five points of the star design give a variety of teething texture experiences!  By far, the most playful option for a teething baby.
It wouldn’t be a holiday without mass hysteria over the latest announcement from the Hatchimals folks.  Hot off the press (and already one of the most anticipated toys of the season) meet ‘HatchiBabies.’  That’s right.  They’re babies!  And this time you won’t know if you’re hatching a baby boy or a baby girl. It’s like a true gender reveal so get those cameras rolling! They also have a secret compartment (and companions) as an added bonus inside that famous speckled egg for extra fun this year.  They’re up for pre-order right now so you might as well get it while you can!  Learn more here.
The VTech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker helps babies 9 to 36 months go from crawling to walking with plenty of fun. Start with the activity panel for floor play, then remove it to step up with the walker. Spinning gears, piano keys, songs, and light-up buttons will keep babies entertained for hours while helping them develop their senses and motor skills.

Let’s face it most of us take our hands for granted. Handimonium is a tiny hands challenge game from Mattel. There are 112 challenges featured in this game and two different ways to play. Simple things become outrageously difficult with the tiny hands. Players have to act out various things with the tiny plastic hands for comedic effect. You’ll have loads of fun. And, yes, the tiny hands are included!

“A cape is a blank slate,” says Dr. Cornett, “a kid can use it to be royalty or a superhero or just as a blanket.” Again, you want to stay away from existent superhero logos to allow the maximum freedom for your kid. We dig this Lynda Sutton DIY Drawing Superhero Cape, which comes with a matching mask and, most importantly, can be washed after a hard day of superheroing.
The original LeapStart was a great learning tool but LeapFrog has now improved it with a unique display that helps reinforce the learning. Using a stylus, kids can interact with every page of the specially designed books as they learn to count, read, and problem-solve. The display brings the learning to life with animation and sound. The system will work with the current Leapstart library and will support the new 3D feature of newly designed 3D books.

Made of high grade flexible plastic materials, the Bendy Ball can be an excellent addition to your newborn baby’s arsenal of toys. It has a center band that is designed as a smiling caterpillar and a colorful smaller rattle ball inside the Bendy. With holes that make up the flexible plastic ball, even the small fingers of babies can grab on to them.
This wonderful play mat lights up and play music, plus the hanging toys make noises also when touched. With over 10 toys and activities to keep baby busy, this toy is really hard to beat, especially because it has three different play modes. As baby grows, the positions of play change and so the Newborn-to-Toddler Play Gym allows these changes within the same toy. Fantastic as a sensory-development toy because of the different textures and shapes that baby can handle.
These are one of the most popular baby toys, and for good reason—they’re also one of the best development toys for babies! Set in beautiful Britain, Forza Horizon 4 amps up the fun with dynamic seasons in a shared open-world experience. Seasons change everything and actually impact gameplay. Paths previously blocked off can be opened during different seasons. The game allows you to play with other people in the community. The visuals and gameplay couldn’t be different. It’s a completely new take on Horizon. Fans have been asking for 60 FPS mode, and the developer has delivered. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.

We recently spoke to Dr. Nick Cornett, a play therapist in northwest Arkansas — the play therapy center of the United States — to get his take on what toys he’d recommend for toddlers. According to Cornett, “the more open-ended the toy, the better.”  It’s just like how an interviewer avoids yes / no questions; they circumscribe dialogue. Cornett divides toys up by “real life” toys, “active or constructive” toys, and “creative expression” toys. Each genre offers the kid a chance to truly express himself, and therefore a therapist to observe. Here, per Cornett, are some parameters of — and our choices for — seven great toys for toddlers.
The Fire 7 Kids Edition is the newest addition to the Fire family of tablets. This is an affordable, fully-featured tablet with a durable kid-proof design and a beautiful 7-inch display. It features the best parental controls of any tablet on the market and it’s the ultimate for learning and entertainment. One year of FreeTime Unlimited provides access to a vast library of apps, games, educational content and more from PBS Kids, Nickeledeon, Disney, and more. The tablet features 16 GB of storage for apps, games, music, and more and it is expandable to 256 GB via microSD media. The best part? Amazon offers a 2-year unconditional replacement guarantee if your child breaks it, they replace it with no questions asked! Choose from three fun color varieties – blue, pink and yellow.

This vintage-inspired, all-sustainable-wood camper play set comes with four peg people and a pet dog ready to hit the road — or the front hall. “One-year-olds are just figuring out how they can influence the world around them, so they love putting things into containers and taking them out,” says Lytle. “This really speaks to that urge. It’s also nice that it’s a bus because a child that young is more likely to have been in a car or bus than a boat or plane, so this is more relatable.”

How cool is this new game!  Connect 4 Shots is similar to the one that we all grew up with, but with a twist! This time you have to bounce the balls into the right slots to try and get four of the same color in a row (or diagonal) to win! This is one that you’ll not only want to play with your kids, but will probably end up taking over and playing with your own friends.  And, well, drinks may be involved.

“At 1, kids are probably starting to pull themselves up on furniture and maybe even take a couple of steps,” explains Lytle. “When they’re up and walking, they’re most interested in toys that might support them but can also be part of their playtime.” Try this classic toy that an early (or soon-to-be) walker can operate on their own, while toting around their most prized belongings-slash-some-Cheerios.

This is a good little ride for a baby who can sit up with complete control and is at least very close to crawling. You will need to closely supervise to ensure safety, but the action of rocking back and forth for a baby is their version of a wild roller coaster and the look on his face when he’s riding will have you convinced you’re the best gift-giver in the world.

For the most part, Dr. Cornett says, therapists try to avoid pop-culture toys. Why? Big names immediately set the parameters of play for the kid, thus infringing on imagination. “Every kid is going to pretty much play with Buzz Lightyear in the same way. A generic superhero is much better.” It turns out escaping the world of branded merch is nearly impossible. Whatever happened to the unlogo’d tight-wearing action figures of yore? They’re gone.  We like Nina Warriors (Set of Four) from Child Therapy Toys, which can be pretty much any sort of superhero you want them to be.

The Ultimate Battle ship is a fun and exciting set to build and features openings in both the front and rear. It is really nicely designed and perfect for inspiring kids’ imaginations. Kids will love recreating their favorite scenes from Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. It’s also an excellent set to display for your friends and it comes with several cool minifigures, including Thanos, Iron Man, Star-Lord, and Gamora. A total of three minifigures along with weapons, the Infinity Gauntlet, and ten Power Burst elements are included.
It’s time to head back to the 90s! Polly Pocket is making a big return in 2018 with the Polly Pocket World Assortment. These compact Pocket Worlds are perfect for taking the fun on the go. Toddlers can also build their motor skills with sorting, matching and stacking activities. By 18 months, your toddler's gait will smooth out, likely making him more interested in on-the-go play—he may even take a stab at kicking a ball around. More refined motor skills means building even taller block towers and enjoying scribbling on paper with a thick crayon. Your little one could also be more into solitary play as he grows and gains new abilities.

Here are wooden pegs and rings to mix and match in every variation. “I think this kind of stuff is fun. Children love stacking things because they want to make things bigger, as big as themselves,” she says. “Whenever kids find something they can do and it’s a little bit of a struggle, but not a huge struggle, that’s the key. It’s just a little bit hard to put those pegs in the holes. That builds some fine motor coordination.”
Hot Wheels is known for its physical play, but now it is blending the physical and virtual world with Augmoto. Augmoto adds AR on top of a classic Hot Wheels race track. In order to race your opponent around the track, players have to complete mini games using an app. For example, players can earn missile attacks, which can be used to slow down your opponent. The AR component adds a strategic element to the classic Hot Wheels track, making it feel more like a video game.

These dissolve so quickly that they’re the least scary solid food you can give your baby. If you don’t believe us, try them yourself; you’ll be surprised how quickly this goes from looking like a choking hazard to completely melted in your mouth without the use of your teeth at all. The taste isn’t so great (for us, but for a baby that’s just experiencing all tastes for the first time, it’s wonderful), but after you and baby are more comfortable with them, you can give them to baby without worrying if she’s going to choke. And handing them to a screaming baby is just another quick fix we like to have in our parenting arsenal.

The Bumpy Ball is so cute and colorful, plus it is a great teaching tool for baby to learn how to use those tiny fingers. It has multi-textured fabric and plastic nubs that are easy for baby to hold, grasp, and even throw when a bit older. A wonderful teething toy on the fabric nubs and a rattling joy in the plastic nubs to entertain baby with the plastic beads inside. Baby’s senses will be alive with visual and audio effects that the Bumpy Ball provides.
Show your love with a big splash by gifting your little one this musical seahorse plushie. Fisher-Price’s Soothe-and-Glow Seahorse sings eight different lullabies and classic songs to help your newborn nod off in a dreamy haze of their favorite tunes. If music is too stimulating for your baby, the toy also features a function which plays soothing ocean sounds to lull them into dreamland. If you remove the electronics from the toy, the base is machine washable, so even if baby makes a mess, their seafaring friend will survive the ordeal. To activate the glowing lights and soothing sounds, baby simply has to hug the seahorse. Music will play for up to five minutes before turning off automatically. And unlike many other noisy toys, this seahorse comes with volume control so you can adjust its levels for baby’s optimal bedtime (or playtime!) experience. BENEFITS This cute little seahorse will sing your child to sleep at just the right volume. Between it's classical lullabies and soothing ocean tracks, baby will feel peachy, beachy and ready for bedtime. PROS
These 10 BPA-free rattle teethers are also musical instruments that allow your baby to explore different sounds and feel like a bandleader in their very own home.
