Toddlers are constantly learning and growing, which is why educational toys are so popular for this age group. Learning toys are the perfect way for parents to keep their little ones entertained while teaching them new skills like walking, counting, and writing. It’s definitely a win-win when playtime is educational, and that’s why learning toys for toddlers are a great gift.
When it comes to playing with babies, how much your child gets out of it is directly related to how much time and effort you put into it. "Baby's development doesn't happen in a vacuum," says Rachel Coley, a pediatric occupational therapist who blogs at Can Do Kiddo. "A big part of baby hitting key milestones and gaining skills has to do with the materials, experiences and opportunities to practice that baby receives. By choosing toys and activities that match what your little one is ready to work on, you make the most of your infant's awake times and set the stage for important early learning."

Music is a wonderful tool for encouraging language development with toddlers.  In addition to learning important components of language such as rhythm and rhyme, music also has been proven to use many different parts of the brain.  Finger plays, simple songs, and exposure to various musical instruments are all excellent ways to promote language development!

Choosing the most popular teething toy for babies is quite easy. Just look at the number of positive reviews and you should already have an idea of its popularity. Unfortunately, this is not the only thing that you need to consider. Our team of researchers also had to consider the overall safety of the materials used in the design and manufacture of the teething toy. The use of harmful chemicals in the finishing of the product is a big no-no for us. Additionally, we had to look at the overall quality of the teething toy as well as the trustworthiness of the teething toy manufacturer. More importantly, we believe, the best teething toy should be able to provide the necessary sensory and psychomotor development that babies need.

We recently spoke to Dr. Nick Cornett, a play therapist in northwest Arkansas — the play therapy center of the United States — to get his take on what toys he’d recommend for toddlers. According to Cornett, “the more open-ended the toy, the better.”  It’s just like how an interviewer avoids yes / no questions; they circumscribe dialogue. Cornett divides toys up by “real life” toys, “active or constructive” toys, and “creative expression” toys. Each genre offers the kid a chance to truly express himself, and therefore a therapist to observe. Here, per Cornett, are some parameters of — and our choices for — seven great toys for toddlers.

Examples: Dress-up clothing, blocks, toy food and plastic plates, action figures, stuffed animals and dolls, trains and trucks, toddler-friendly dollhouses, toy tools, and “real-life” accessories such as a wrapping paper tube “fire hose” for your little fire fighter. The all-purpose large cardboard box is always a big hit for toddlers and is free. (Call an appliance store about picking up one of their refrigerator boxes). Children can learn to explore the world through a number of toys — or just through simple household items like pots and pans. For parents and caregivers, the important thing is to facilitate this experimentation. Says Lytle: “You really want parents to be there playing with their children, following their lead, allowing them to figure out what happens, and asking them questions about it like, ‘Oh my gosh, did you see that? Did you see what happened? Do you think that would happen if we did it again?’ If you think about it, asking those questions get at the scientific method.” No wonder this award-winning toy is beloved by parents and children everywhere. In addition to being a musical instrument, it allows kids to experiment with cause and effect.

"It's a myth that babies can't play, even if they don't seem to be 'doing much' yet—they’re still taking everything in,” says Amanda Gummer, a research psychologist specializing in child development and spokesperson for the Genius of Play, a movement to raise awareness about the importance of play in kids’ lives. “Playing is a great way for parents and caregivers to build that vital bond with their baby, while sensory stimulations helps baby's brain grow.”

Between 4 and 7 months, baby is working on sitting independently. If she's still sitting with support, you can encourage her to strengthen her trunk muscles (abs and spine) by putting toys in front of her and encouraging her to reach for them. Once baby can sit without needing to put her hands in front of her (called "tripoding"), she'll be free to use those hands to play with toys and, hopefully, entertain herself for short periods of time (but remember, never leave baby unattended).
There’s a reason why the Little Tikes Shopping Cart has been a favorite toddler toy for generations. This is one toy that boys and girls will use for hours, engaging in imaginative role play as they fill the cart just like mom and dad do at the store. The easy-push wheels are designed to protect indoor surfaces, yet they’re durable enough for outdoor use. Little shoppers can load up the basket with all the items on their shopping list and there’s even a fold down seat (just like in a real shopping cart) so they can tote along their favorite doll or stuffed animal.

Interacting with the fish tank reveals a gift shop for get-well gifts, such as a teddy or heart balloon. The exam room is perfect for medical emergencies or check-ups. Here you can even reveal two x-rays. Accessories include a medical bag, stethoscope, arm cast, leg cast, blood pressure machine, and more to enhance your play experience.
“Kids love to recreate scenes they see in their daily life,” says Dr. Cornett. A cash register is a great example. (though, a Square reader would be even more realistic.) We Like Fisher-Price’s Classics Retro Cash Register. A throwback to the golden oldie Fisher-Price from 1975, is sturdily made, comes with eight coins, and kinda looks like a slot machine, a nice if subtle jab at late market capitalism.

A: Colorful toys help to stimulate baby’s eyesight and engage them in play. High-contrast toys, such as toys with lots of different animals, help your child to switch focus. By pointing out the colors, and talking about the different animals, your baby will learn to follow along with you, rather than staying fixed on one subject. They might not understand the meaning of your words yet, or be able to differentiate between the animals fully, but they’ll develop the mental capacity to change tracks. Deceptively simple concepts and toys can still have a huge impact on your child’s learning to assess and functionally interact with the world around them.
Vroom! Vroom! Counting down the days to Christmas just got a whole lot more exciting. Now you can count down the days to Christmas with Hot Wheels. It’s the perfect Advent Calendar for car lovers.

Blocks aren't the only powerhouse in the playroom. Even infants can follow a ball with their eyes as it rolls across the floor. In doing so, says Maureen Maiocco, early-childhood program director at SUNY Canton, in Canton, New York, they "must follow the direction and anticipate the location of the ball as it moves toward them." This kind of visual tracking helps coordinate your baby's eye movements with his body's movements. Plus, predicting when the ball will reappear reinforces the idea that when something disappears from sight, it's not necessarily gone for good.
