Made of high grade flexible plastic materials, the Bendy Ball can be an excellent addition to your newborn baby’s arsenal of toys. It has a center band that is designed as a smiling caterpillar and a colorful smaller rattle ball inside the Bendy. With holes that make up the flexible plastic ball, even the small fingers of babies can grab on to them.
Teething is arguably the most unpredictable process in a baby’s development. Some babies are born with one or two teeth, others don’t have teeth even by the first year. There’s also no way to predict how long it will take your baby to have a full set of teeth from the time the first ones come in. That means your baby can go through many different stages of teething over a long period of time. Hence, versatility–specifically, adaptability–was one of our primary criteria when we looked at baby teethers and teething toys.

At the end of the day, however, social interaction between children and parents is really the most important thing to remember. “Even if you’re laying the foundation for later cognitive development, all learning happens in relationships,” she says. “Spend as much time as you can with your child to make that time as uninterrupted and undistracted as possible.” To help you parse what that means (and to make sure you’re first in line as the friend-aunt of choice), we’ve asked the parenting team over at PopSugar Moms to pick out the grooviest age-appropriate toys on the market, with Lytle explaining what makes them the best gift for a 1-year-old specifically. We’ve also made a few additional selections based on what Lytle had to say. We’ve also got gift guides for kids of all ages, including 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, 4-year-olds, 5-year-olds, 7-year-olds, 8-year-olds, and 9-year-olds.

Toy shopping is serious business. Toys that are too easy will bore your babe. Those that are too advanced will aggravate him. But pick one that's just right for his skill level, and you'll be giving him hours of education, exploration, and enjoyment "Toys are an investment in a child's development," says Marianne Szymanski, founder and president of Toy Tips, Inc. and co-author of Toy Tips: A Parent's Essential Guide to Smart Toy Choices. Ready to shop? We've compiled a list of age-appropriate toys -- as well as ones to avoid -- for each developmental level.

Infants are constantly developing their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. At the same time, they're rapidly taking in the colors, sounds, textures, and even tastes around them. Some of the best toys and baby products for infants allow them to safely explore those curiosities without proving too challenging or frustrating for their developmental stage. And if a toy can grow with them and last through a few stages, all the better.

Cardboard blocks are great, says Dr. Cornett, since a kid can build forts, walls, and towns with them. Sounding like a parent, Dr. Cornett notes that you want to look consider, “durability and affordability.” We like Melissa & Doug’s Jumbo Extra-Thick Cardboard Building Blocks. This set of 30 blocks, from toy whisperers Melissa & Doug, are, well, extra-thick and come in three sizes.

All your kids unicorn dreams are coming to life this season!  Yep, this is an actual electric unicorn that your kiddo can sit on and ride around the house (or outside).  This magical wonder goes backwards and forwards by using the reigns and can go up to 3 mph. In escape rooms, players work together to solve puzzle to escape before time runs out. Now the fun of an escape room is making its way to board games. If you like narrative-driven games, Thinkfun has some great board games that vary in difficultly. For kids, there is Stargazer’s Manor, which contains easy puzzles that kids can solve on their own. If you are looking to join in on the fun, check out Dr. Gravely’s Retreat. The game contains a series of puzzles to solve in sealed envelopes.

A fun little ‘toy’ for all the tech kids out there who are always on their phones or tablets!  This cute PopSocket has the message ‘Choose Kindness’ on the top with a cartoon-like rainbow.  In a world that could use some gentle reminders, we think this is the friendly thought our kids could see each and every day and hopefully always remember to choose kindness.  There’s also a cute magical unicorn one too!
And they called it puppy love: The KD Kids Rescue Runts are adoptable plush pets that kids can "rescue," groom and love. A grooming kit includes a brush, tweezers and more to help rid their pet of (pretend!) fleas, clean its paws, wipe away tears and brush its soft but messy fur. Adorable and adoptable, make this the best toddler Christmas gift ever by bringing home all four rescue puppies! ($20; amazon.com)
The LEGO Ideas Ship In A Bottle is a very classy looking set. Although it seems a bit smaller than expected, it’s actually 1:1 scale to many ships in a bottle. From a distance it looks quite realistic and what’s great is that it doesn’t occupy too much space. The cap and cork is exquisitely designed and great to look at. As for the ship, it features a nice build. It’s surprisingly sturdy and dense considering its size. Decide whether you want the boat inside or outside of the bottle beforehand, as it’s not so easy to remove once it’s inside the bottle.

While adults and children can play almost anything together, there are some toys that are designed for adult participation. As your child approaches age 3 and beyond, early board games—that involve using one’s memory or simple board games that do not require reading—are fun for all ages to play. Consider starting a “family game night” when all of you play together. Board games encourage counting, matching, and memory skills, as well as listening skills and self-control (as children learn to follow the rules). They also nurture language and relationship-building skills. Another important benefit is teaching children to be gracious winners and how to cope with losing.
If you prefer multiple teething surfaces for your baby, then you need The First Years’ Star Teething Blanket. The five points on the teething blanket is made of different, yet equally safe and effective, teething surfaces. There’s soft terry cloth and even a crinkly satin. The soft and chewy textures provide babies with a variety of experiences. Additionally, a squeaker is built-in into one of the star’s points. Each point comes in a different color and comes with a teething blanket loop for easier transport.
STEM is huge right now. Botley is a colorful coding robot that is designed for teaching the youngest coders, as young as 5, how to program. There is no screen or app required. It comes with a variety of pieces. Kids will have to “code” Botley to navigate through a variety of obstacle courses. It teaches basic programming skills, such as loops and simple directional commands.

Start your engines, collect your coins, and prepare for fun! The game board looks like Monopoly but is inspired by worlds straight out of the Mario Kart videogames. Each character has its own strategic abilities. Just like in the game, you can lay a banana to stop rivals in their tracks. Everytime you pass go, you’ll have an opportunity to race in the Grand Prix. The game includes a game board, 4 character kart tokens, 32 cards, banana tokens, 90 coins and 2 dice. The game is designed for 2-4 players. It’s the perfect gift for any Nintendo or Mario Kart fan!
Stardew Valley delivers comfort rarely found in other games. Players will farm, fish, craft, mine, fight monsters, make friendships, and more. This farming adventure has plenty to offer. It beautifully combines farm simulation with RPG elements to create an intriguing, absorbing world. Although the game plays well on other platforms, it feels even better on the Switch thanks to the ability to play on the go.
A toy that attaches easily to your child’s stroller is a genius way to keep your kid occupied and happy while out and about. The Skip Hop Silver Lining Cloud Rattle Moon Stroller Toy is great because kids love the neon rattle beads that stimulate their auditory and visual senses, as well as the textured, cloud-shaped teether. This toy is recommended for kids zero and up.

Babies love books. They love the pictures and the act of turning pages, and it’s very often the best way to occupy baby without actively engaging him yourself. So books are a great distraction while you’re out shopping or while you’re doing the dishes. The best part of these books is how small they are – a few of these guys will fit in the diaper bag easily! And because they come in a pack that makes them less than a dollar each, losing one or two here and there won’t break your heart. Because that adorable little baby is going to throw everything out of the stroller anyway!
Since younger babies can't exactly wander over to the toy bins and pick out something that catches their eye, it falls to you to select playthings that give baby the chance to practice and refine new skills. Don’t know where to start? Don’t worry. Read on to get age-appropriate play ideas and learn about the best developmental toys for babies at every age and stage.

Parents report that all of this variety keeps their baby entertained during car trips, playtime, walks in the stroller, and more. Freddie the Firefly clips onto car seats or stroller bars, making it less likely that the toy will end up out of reach on the floor or ground. The thin body may be easier for small hands to grasp, making it a good choice during the time when motor skills and muscles are still developing. Freddie the Firefly is ready to go wherever your baby does — and it promises to stay close with the help of the built-in clip!
You can look at your baby’s teething as the process by which his or her very first deciduous teeth break through his or her gums. This usually occurs by the time your baby reaches 6 months old, although it is not uncommon to see babies as young as 3 months and as old as 1 year to have their very first primary, deciduous, baby, or milk tooth. What can be expected is that by 3 years of age, your baby would have already erupted 20 milk or baby teeth. During the first eruption, your baby’s first tooth will most likely appear on the lower front of his or her gums. One to two months later, you can expect the upper front teeth.
The all-new Laser X Fusion blaster delivers an incredible range of 250-feet. For twice the range, add the long-range adapter. What’s cool? It’s compatible with the previous generation of blasters and allows for an unlimited number of players. It works indoors or outdoors and even day or night. The complete set includes everything you need for two players.
This toy is for a big baby who is steady on his feet and able to hold a sitting posture. They even recommend the ages of 3 to 8 for its use. But if you are providing direct involvement with baby, this can provide a lot of fun for him and he’ll age into it nicely. It requires no pushing or batteries; its mechanical operation will allow your baby (or you, until baby can figure it out on his own) to operate this car by simply turning the wheel. And it’s durable enough that the manufacturer even suggests the parent hop on to try it out themselves.

Laser tag is great because you don’t have to worry about ammo, breaking anything, or somebody getting hurt. You can run around outside or even inside on Christmas day. It’s definitely more fun with more people. With a range of up to 300 feet, the blasters feature cool lights, sounds, and even immersive sensations to make you feel the action. Let the fun and games begin!
Baby Einstein Octoplush: This soft plush pal is a great toy for grasping. By squeezing each patterned leg, baby will hear the corresponding color in English, Spanish, or French. Even young babies can interact with the Octoplush by touching and grasping to feel the various textures, and by squeezing to play classical melodies. This little guy also has volume control, so moms and dads can decide how loud is loud enough. It's a great toy for toddlers, too, as they continue to explore music, sound, and touch.

Play all your favorite Nintendo games at home or on the go. There’s amazing content for every gamer and for all ages and its library continues to expand. Plus, eventually you’ll be able to play classics! The Switch literally switches up conventions and lets you play anywhere. The Switch is in extremely high demand with stores unable to keep shelves stocked since launch day. Consider yourself lucky if you can score one!
These dissolve so quickly that they’re the least scary solid food you can give your baby. If you don’t believe us, try them yourself; you’ll be surprised how quickly this goes from looking like a choking hazard to completely melted in your mouth without the use of your teeth at all. The taste isn’t so great (for us, but for a baby that’s just experiencing all tastes for the first time, it’s wonderful), but after you and baby are more comfortable with them, you can give them to baby without worrying if she’s going to choke. And handing them to a screaming baby is just another quick fix we like to have in our parenting arsenal.
Give baby the fun of an aquarium this holiday season with the sweet Melissa & Doug Deluxe Fishbowl Fill and Spill. This super-soft baby toy comes with four ocean friends including a fish, seahorse, octopus and sea star that all conveniently stash in the splash-free aquarium. There you have it. Blocks, balls, and cups -- unsung superheroes of the toy world. So what's their secret? Some experts believe that convergent playthings (with only one purpose, such as puzzles) encourage children to seek out the one correct answer while divergent playthings (with more than one purpose) guide children to many approaches, helping them understand that some problems have many solutions. That must be why kids go back to these toys again and again. They'll never be the must-have toys of the moment, but they won't be forgotten tomorrow either.
What if you could transform a skateboard into a scooter in seconds? Imagine one board that lets you skate, ride, balance, and bounce. The MorfBoard is a high-performance deck that transforms in seconds. Using lock-and-release technology, it allows you to easily swap out the components. It was absolutely wild to watch the demonstration and see the board instantly transform. It’s like a Swiss Army knife for skateboards.
There are two kinds of developmental issues: Developmental Delay and Developmental Disability. While the terms are used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two but that difference can be hard to decipher within a child. Developmental delay can be caused from short term issues such as an ear infection causing sensory delay or a long term hospitalization causing a delay in motor skills. If the delay is spotted and intervened early, a toddler can quickly catch up in their developments.

This tablet will adapt to your kid's learning level by adjusting the skill level for the different games and activities offered in the form of apps! New challenges will appear as your little brainiac hits mental milestones. Plus, we love the shatterproof screen for slippery fingers and tantrum throwers.

There’s also the main police station and holding cell. There’s a functional turret that helps with imaginative play. A really cool feature is that the jail bars can be broken off so the prisoner can escape. The police station has a nice lookout area. There’s a good amount of detail inside the police station and a cave beneath the holding cell featuring fun action for the cougar. The set comes with 7 minifigures, a police vehicle, motorbike, and two helicopters.
Why experts love it: "There's more than one way to play with nesting bowls—make them fit together, stack them, knock them down, use them to pour," says Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, PhD, a developmental psychologist at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and co-author of A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool. "They can be taken apart and put back together, which builds imagination."

Get ready for some serious laughs! The Pie Face Cannon game ups the ante on this wild and wacky game. Two players compete against each other. One player has the cannon full of whipped cream while the other has a pair of buttons. This is war! The catch? Now kids can block the pie attack. When you press the buttons at the right time, it will activate a large red hand in front of your face. It’s a fun twist on the popular game that people will love sharing on social.
Welp, Christmas is just around the corner (hooray?) and your kids are already asking for everything under the sun, so we’ve narrowed down their toy demands to the ones that are the most popular and must-haves of the 2018 season.  Why not stay on-trend and ahead of the curve all at the same time? Plus, if you’re running out of ideas on what toys to gift them this season (just in case you’re totally over giving them all kinds of candy), their birthday (geesh didn’t they just have one of those?!) or just want to pick them up a little something for no reason at all, we’ve got you covered.
A: Babies drool, this is unavoidable. If you find with these toys, your baby is drooling more excessively than before, it’s because the extra stimulation causes more salivation. Keeping a burp rag or extra cloth on hand will help you with the clean-up. Consider also switching toys out regularly as this can help minimize drooling. Differing textures will provide stimulation to different areas of the mouth and gums, helping to break the amount of occurring salivation.

You may wonder why we need to have baby teeth only to have them replaced by more permanent ones. Well, it’s all about developing the oral cavity of your baby. You see, it is your baby’s milk teeth that will maintain the arch length of his or her jaw. This is crucial because it is in these same places where their permanent teeth will develop. Milk teeth serve to guide the eruption pathway of your baby’s permanent teeth. It also helps in the formation and development of the jaw bones and muscles.
Toddlers love to take apart, put back together, pull out, put in, add on, and build up. Choose toys that are “open-ended” in the sense that your child can play many different games with them. For example, wooden blocks or chunky plastic interlocking blocks can be used to make a road, a zoo, a bridge, or a spaceship. Toys like this spark your child’s imagination and help him develop problem-solving and logical thinking skills.

Using the grocery shopping analogy, I would say that some toys are more nutritionally dense than others and we want to make sure our babies and children are getting some exposure to those toys that encourage exploration, creativity, sustained attention, social interaction, sensory processing skills, motor development and learning. My aim is to pass along some new ways of thinking about toys so that you can balance your child's "toy diet" with some developmentally powerful toys and activities.
These are fantastic. I got one for both of my sons and it really is something how they actually record your kid’s name into the song and it’s not all shit like with “If you’re ‘insert robotic name here’ and you know it”. It really does sound seamless. I think it’s especially great for kids that have unique names and aren’t going to find the preprinted mugs with their names on it anytime soon.
