“One-year-olds are starting to notice routines and patterns in the world around them, so to the extent a 1-year-old is getting into a car or taxi and going somewhere,” explains Lytle, “that’s a fairly basic routine that they might like to role-play with toys that reflect their experience.” They might appreciate this Taxi Push Toy by Manny and Simon, which is known for its ecoconscious, American-made toys. It’s perfect for city babies who’ll learn how to hail a taxi before they can speak a full sentence.

It’s an old-fashioned jack-in-the-box, except instead of a creepy clown, it’s an adorable Curious George! It also happens to play “Pop Goes the Weasel.” “This deals with the concept of object permanence, meaning that even though you can’t see the toy that’s in the box, it still exists,” says Lytle. “Kids start picking up on this idea when they’re 1, and they continue learning it throughout childhood. Toys that surprise children are interesting because they appeal to a 1-year-old’s understanding of routine and patterns, and they’re always fun and playful. But if you have a child that will have a very strong, scared reaction, this is perhaps not the best toy for them.”

For the most part, Dr. Cornett says, therapists try to avoid pop-culture toys. Why? Big names immediately set the parameters of play for the kid, thus infringing on imagination. “Every kid is going to pretty much play with Buzz Lightyear in the same way. A generic superhero is much better.” It turns out escaping the world of branded merch is nearly impossible. Whatever happened to the unlogo’d tight-wearing action figures of yore? They’re gone.  We like Nina Warriors (Set of Four) from Child Therapy Toys, which can be pretty much any sort of superhero you want them to be.

Blocks are the educational equivalent of a multivitamin. Children playing with blocks aren't just honing their gross and fine motor skills, they're learning everything from fundamental math concepts to problem solving. One study even showed that preschoolers who were adept at playing with blocks had higher math grades and test scores when they got to middle school than those who were not. As Sharon MacDonald, a trainer of early-childhood teachers and author of Block Play (Gryphon House), explains, "When your child works with blocks, he develops an understanding of fractions, shapes, and counting." Of course, it's not as if your 2-year-old is mastering halves and quarters. Math lessons unfold in different stages for different ages.

He’ll be safe and sound in his crib and entertained by the rolling ladybug ball and twisting bee. As for tummy time, his own little face will have him looking up and strengthening his neck muscles for much longer than he would without this motivator.

We rarely think of our daily habits, such as brushing our hair or teeth, as a practical method for stimulating our brains and improving essential skills. This toothbrush and toy combo is shaped like a banana which, due to its sweetness seems to be a fruit most children will happily eat. However, consider the shape and texture of this toy will help children improve finger dexterity and fine motor skills. As our littles learn to grip or tighten their grips, their brains are stimulated in an irreplaceable manner.
Want to have fun in the dark? The Crayola Picture Projector comes with 3 translucent markers that allow kids to draw right on the surface. Using a towel or cloth, they wet erase so you begin creating again for hours of endless fun. It’s sleek and portable and even doubles as a flashlight. Kids will love telling ghost stories with this fun projector.
Mattel has brought to life the flying dinosaur from Jurassic World with its cool new drone. With a ton of safety features, this kid-friendly drone has a patented design that prevents the propellers from spinning if you grab it. The coolest part? The flapping wings bring the dinosaur to life. The drone makes flying easy for little ones with its innovative auto-flight and auto-landing features.

Shadows In The Forest is a surprisingly refreshing and clever game. You play the game in the dark and light and shadows are a core part of the game. One player is the lantern, a pursuer represented by a small LED lantern. Other players are the Shadowlings, who crave darkness. The Shadowlings have to gather under the tree, while the lantern has to freeze Shadowlings in its light. The catch? Shadowlings can’t cross light beams projected by the Lantern. It’s the perfect game for sleepovers and requires chess-like strategy and cooperative play.
Recreate the Gyrosphere experience with this Jurassic World Gyrosphere RC from Mattel. Inside you can fit your 3.75-inch Jurassic World figures. It comes with a non-articulated Owen figure. It features a power switch to toggle it on or off, and it automatically powers down if it’s inactive. There are two buttons on the controller. The bottom one controls the motion, while the top one is for direction. You can imagine what this does to cats.

If you put this on your little one’s wish list, be prepared for the grandmas to duke it out over who gets to buy it. A truly wow-worthy toy, it’s at the pinnacle of top toddler Christmas gifts. Multi-directional casters roll in all directions, so it’s easy for kids to work on gross motor skills and balance. The cushioned, comfy body of this pretty porker can be wiped clean (bonus!).

Now your kiddos can practice their claw machine skills right in their very own home!  It’s just like the one in the arcade, but they have a much better chance at winning.  It lights up, plays music, and has two different modes of timed-play.  It also comes with 6 little surprise packs that you can refill once they win them all. Super fun and something that you may want to play yourself!

We recently spoke to Dr. Nick Cornett, a play therapist in northwest Arkansas — the play therapy center of the United States — to get his take on what toys he’d recommend for toddlers. According to Cornett, “the more open-ended the toy, the better.”  It’s just like how an interviewer avoids yes / no questions; they circumscribe dialogue. Cornett divides toys up by “real life” toys, “active or constructive” toys, and “creative expression” toys. Each genre offers the kid a chance to truly express himself, and therefore a therapist to observe. Here, per Cornett, are some parameters of — and our choices for — seven great toys for toddlers.
These super cute Little Live Wrapples do just that….wrapple around your kids wrist.  Their tail is like those snap bracelets we all used to have in the 80’s and the 90’s, so they stay on their wrist securely.  Plus, these cuties have over 50 different sounds and reactions and their eyes even light up to match their mood!  There are 4 different Wrapples to choose from.  See all the options here!

Laser tag is great because you don’t have to worry about ammo, breaking anything, or somebody getting hurt. You can run around outside or even inside on Christmas day. It’s definitely more fun with more people. With a range of up to 300 feet, the blasters feature cool lights, sounds, and even immersive sensations to make you feel the action. These dissolve so quickly that they’re the least scary solid food you can give your baby. If you don’t believe us, try them yourself; you’ll be surprised how quickly this goes from looking like a choking hazard to completely melted in your mouth without the use of your teeth at all. The taste isn’t so great (for us, but for a baby that’s just experiencing all tastes for the first time, it’s wonderful), but after you and baby are more comfortable with them, you can give them to baby without worrying if she’s going to choke. And handing them to a screaming baby is just another quick fix we like to have in our parenting arsenal.

Does your child love to draw? What little artist wouldn’t love a case filled with 140 art supplies from crayons to washable markers? There are several different cases to choose from, but we love the look of this cute case. The best part? There are so many fun tools inside for your budding artist to experiment with. You can look at your baby’s teething as the process by which his or her very first deciduous teeth break through his or her gums. This usually occurs by the time your baby reaches 6 months old, although it is not uncommon to see babies as young as 3 months and as old as 1 year to have their very first primary, deciduous, baby, or milk tooth. What can be expected is that by 3 years of age, your baby would have already erupted 20 milk or baby teeth. During the first eruption, your baby’s first tooth will most likely appear on the lower front of his or her gums. One to two months later, you can expect the upper front teeth.
Babies love taking toys apart and putting them back together. They also like to "dump and fill" putting toys in and out of containers over and over again. Look for nesting and stacking cups, as well as soft toys that attach and un-attach with velcro. These important toys help babies learn to develop their problem solving and fine motor skills, while they practice over and over again.
Between 4 and 7 months, baby is working on sitting independently. If she's still sitting with support, you can encourage her to strengthen her trunk muscles (abs and spine) by putting toys in front of her and encouraging her to reach for them. Once baby can sit without needing to put her hands in front of her (called "tripoding"), she'll be free to use those hands to play with toys and, hopefully, entertain herself for short periods of time (but remember, never leave baby unattended).
“I love puppets. They’re a personification of this really cool-looking thing that seems to talk and engage with them. How fun is that?” Dr. Golinkoff says. “It’s great because it’s another persona that speaks and allows them to engage.” Here’s a set of animals and family members to elevate the bedtime story — and further develop your child’s language-acquisition skills and imagination.
Tiny tots are rapidly developing new connections, refining motor skills, acquiring new speech and honing their balance so they can eagerly explore the exciting world around them. And we’ve found the top gift ideas and some learning toys that will not only help build those social, emotional and cognitive foundations, but are fun, engaging and entertaining.

There’s a reason this book is so popular. It’s a great “wind down for sleep” book, and its variation from color to black and white pages reminds us that when babies are very small their eyesight can only pick up a few colors. The black and white pages may stand out better for babies, and reading the book in a low, almost-whisper will have baby thinking about bedtime enough that you might just read her right into a gentle sleep.
Show your love with a big splash by gifting your little one this musical seahorse plushie. Fisher-Price’s Soothe-and-Glow Seahorse sings eight different lullabies and classic songs to help your newborn nod off in a dreamy haze of their favorite tunes. If music is too stimulating for your baby, the toy also features a function which plays soothing ocean sounds to lull them into dreamland. If you remove the electronics from the toy, the base is machine washable, so even if baby makes a mess, their seafaring friend will survive the ordeal. To activate the glowing lights and soothing sounds, baby simply has to hug the seahorse. Music will play for up to five minutes before turning off automatically. And unlike many other noisy toys, this seahorse comes with volume control so you can adjust its levels for baby’s optimal bedtime (or playtime!) experience. BENEFITS This cute little seahorse will sing your child to sleep at just the right volume. Between it's classical lullabies and soothing ocean tracks, baby will feel peachy, beachy and ready for bedtime. PROS
This is our first criteria for anything that goes in a baby’s mouth. Having said that, “contaminant-free” can mean different things, depending on standards and regulations from various consumer safety agencies within, and outside of the United States. We’ve tried to be as helpful as possible by stating each product’s non-contaminants policy, but we did make sure to select baby products that are BPA-free. Most of our picks are also free of contaminants like phthalates, PVC, lead, and latex. Some even go so far as to avoid petroleum, which is admirable. However, being completely free of any and all toxins is virtually impossible.
Ready for a fun engineering adventure? The Great Treehouse Engineering Adventure offers fun STEM projects and experiments. Highlights include learning how a block-and-tackle pulley system works, learning how to wire up a chain of LED lanterns, and learning how to build and use a catapult. Who knew learning engineering principles could be this fun?!
A toddler will start to achieve milestones in the realm of creativity as well. They’ll start to understand simple fantasy stories and how to develop and use their own creativity for pretend play. During this period, since the imagination becomes very active, it is crucial that the toddler learns how to separate fantasy from reality and an issue with nightmares might develop as well. In response, if your toddler achieves the milestone of simple problem solving and learning what is and isn’t correct, the issue shouldn’t expand into something more.
All the kids will be screaming for ice cream this holiday thanks to this sweet play cart. Toddlers can use the magic scooper to create tasty sundaes, all the while learning the names of colors, flavors and toppings, and how to count to 10. The cart even has wheels, so kids can take their burgeoning ice cream business on the go (and work their gross motor skills as they push). Hooray for educational Christmas toys!
Celebrating 50 years of Hot Wheels fun, Mattel will launch The Hot Wheels Original Sweet 16 – based on the original 16 toy cars in the line. Build your Hot Wheels collection with this awesome 50-pack set.
While it’s not totally a toy, we had to share this one with you because of how obsessed the kids are with it!  The new Echo Dot for Kids is, well, designed and created just for the kiddos.  They can play games with Alexa, ask her to read them a bedtime story, play their favorite music, and so much more.  Plus, because it’s for kids they won’t (and can’t) run into any of those awkward situations they could run into with the regular Echo.  This one comes in blue, red, and green! More colors here.
