Every week I take my kid to a play therapist. My son is great and, because he’s six and also my son, has a hard time expressing his emotions through words. His play therapist is great too but out-of-network and so crazy expensive. Regardless, it’s totally worth it. Play therapy allows my son a way to express himself non-verbally and provides a professional to, to some extent, decode his play. (Like most therapists, she meets separately with us.) But you don’t need to be in a play therapist to offer your kid the ability to work through their shit — or simply express themselves in a more natural way — with toys. You just need the right toys.

A: This choice is entirely up to you as a parent or guardian; teething gels don’t alter or affect a toy’s effectiveness. If you are already open to using teething gels, then you can apply a small amount to the surface of the toy or even directly to the gums. However, if you are concerned about your baby’s exposure to harsh or toxic chemicals, you may want to avoid teething gels altogether as some do contain ingredients, which while proven to relieve pain and swelling, can also cause damaging effects to the liver and kidneys.
Toy shopping is serious business. Toys that are too easy will bore your babe. Those that are too advanced will aggravate him. But pick one that's just right for his skill level, and you'll be giving him hours of education, exploration, and enjoyment "Toys are an investment in a child's development," says Marianne Szymanski, founder and president of Toy Tips, Inc. and co-author of Toy Tips: A Parent's Essential Guide to Smart Toy Choices. Ready to shop? We've compiled a list of age-appropriate toys -- as well as ones to avoid -- for each developmental level.

Babies are learning new skills every day, as they are soon quickly motivated to interact with people and their environment. The best toys for infants help babies learn to develop attention, hand-eye coordination, motor skills for rolling and crawling. Many baby toys excite babies and encourage them to babble and speak their first words. Parents do a lot of research on the  best baby toys in order to find ways to offer their children ways to learn during playtime.

There are many factors to consider when evaluating a toy's safety, and a good first step is to remove the potential for one of the greatest hazards small children face: choking. As choking is one of the most common causes of childhood injury (or worse), a baby toy must present no chance for accidental ingestion. Infants and toddlers alike are wont to put things into their mouths; if an object is simply too large to fit in a mouth, that hazard has been mitigated.
A: In an unexpected light, these toys can help babies and toddlers gain a basic understanding of the concept of cause and effect. They experience pain and discomfort and are given a solution to solve their problem. This creates a pathway in their brain to reinforce their understanding of finding a solution. These toys help children learn very early on about problem-solving.

Why experts love it: "There's more than one way to play with nesting bowls—make them fit together, stack them, knock them down, use them to pour," says Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, PhD, a developmental psychologist at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and co-author of A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool. "They can be taken apart and put back together, which builds imagination."

He'll probably roll a few times accidentally if he turns his head too far, but before long he'll doing it intentionally. (Want to get some rolling practice in? Place baby in a side-lying position.) You may also notice baby kicking a bunch while lying on his back, which helps strengthen the belly muscles needed to eventually roll over. Another fun development? Baby may start to intentionally reach for and grasp toys—but knowing how to let go of objects hasn’t set in yet. Keep in mind that babies at this stage are relying on their senses (sight, hearing, touch and smell) to navigate around the new world around them, so offer up some healthy stimulation.

Infants who are less than 28 days old are generally classified as newborns or, in medical parlance, neonates; although it is not uncommon to see some parents calling a 3 month old baby still a newborn. This stage of a child’s development is very crucial as he or she is still adjusting to life outside the protection of the mother’s womb. Neonates are especially vulnerable to infections, injuries, and other illnesses. Unfortunately, it is also a very critical stage in his or her development because anything that he or she experiences or senses by this time will already be imprinted on his or her very young mind.
