The toys listed here that do make sounds or music, do so in a very gentle way that will not frighten or alarm the baby. They are introductory noises and music that soothes the baby into sleep or nap time easily. Not all toys must make sounds, but those that do must encourage the baby to listen and be something that it enjoys hearing. All of these toys do that very nicely.

Next you must account for all the obvious hazards in the play area, such as electrical outlets, into which covers must be inserted when not in use. Watch out for electrical cords as well, which can present multiple dangers at the same time, namely a strangulation hazard, a risk or shock should the cord be cut or torn (or bitten), as well as the chance for injury should a lamp or other object be pulled down atop a youngster. All electrical cords should be tucked out of the way and/or secured to the wall or floor. Also watch out for any other objects that could fall down onto a child -- this includes heavy books.

Next look for toys that are free of potentially harmful materials such as lead, BPA, phthalates, and other dangerous chemicals and compounds. Reading all labels and literature that accompany a toy should be enough to figure out whether or not the toy meets your standards, and be on the lookout for words like "organic" and "nontoxic." Also check the place of manufacture of a product and be aware of inexpensive imports, which may not be entirely trustworthy in their labeling.

Although this basketball set may look challenging for a 2-year-old, Dr. Golinkoff says that children this age can learn pretty fast once you show them how it’s done. It’s also a time when they’re improving their motor skills. “They’re also learning patience,” she says, “which is a type of self-regulation, how to wait. They are increasing their executive functionability, which is the fancy name for being able to control their inhibitions.”
Play gives children the chance to practice new skills over and over again. Toys that give kids a chance to figure something out on their own—or with a little coaching—build their logical thinking skills and help them become persistent problem-solvers. They also help children develop spatial relations skills (understanding how things fit together), hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skills (using the small muscles in the hands and fingers).

3. Promote interaction and language : Some toys are more supportive of playing with  and talking to your baby than others. A book that reads itself to your toddler as she turns pages or pushes buttons leaves little room for a parent to interact. A spider toy that sings the whole "Itsy Bitsy Spider" song doesn't promote imitation of hand motions as mommy or daddy sings it to baby. Look for toys that do less for the child and that allow the space for you as a parent to ask questions, tell a story, sing a song, make an animal noise,  and make observations.

Learning toys are the perfect way for parents to keep their little ones entertained while teaching them new skills like walking, counting, and writing. It’s definitely a win-win when playtime is educational, and that’s why learning toys for toddlers are a great gift.

When they’re not playing with their own kitchen, these fun magnetic men climb up and down the fridge to keep them busy while you’re cooking. “Once you stick them on you can move them around. Do not blame yourself if your toddler does develop a delay or disability. It doesn’t make the toddler any less intelligent nor does it mean they are destined for a life of mediocrity. However, while you shouldn’t stress out over it, neglecting or refusing to accept that your toddler does have a delay or disability could hinder them in the years to come. Just like it’s best to start the nurturing of developmental milestones early, it’s best to start the nurturing of delay and disability healing early as well.

Try these translucent shapes, which are far more interesting than blocks and have hundreds of possible combinations. “Kids see these and want to learn how they work, how they go together, that there’s unlimited possibilities,” she says. “You don’t want to teach your child that there’s only one right answer or one way to put the block together. That’s constraining them too much and doesn’t allow them to have a free will and imagination to create something new. When kids are playing with things like blocks, they’re learning things — like how tall can you go before it falls down? Why do these things stick together in the way that they do? They want to experiment.”

“There’s actually been some research looking at kids using blocks with parents and it turns out that building blocks are a really good way to promote early STEM and math skills,” says Lytle. “Think about the language you’re using when you’re building blocks: bigger, smaller, shorter, taller. If you have kids and parents building bridges with blocks together, you’ll start talking about concepts like stability. Even if you don’t actually use the word stability, you’re still talking about complex engineering concepts.” The pastel-hued wooden building blocks in this 14-piece set have built-in magnets, so they won’t fall down as easily as regular blocks. Plus, they’re made in Honduras, with the goal of creating living-wage jobs for Tegucigalpa residents.

It delivers six degrees of freedom, meaning it tracks your position and orientation so when you move, it moves. It’s something you have to experience. The tracking felt surprisingly accurate, and it was a pure blast to play without any heavy headsets or cumbersome wires. There are many AR toys, but hands-down, it’s the best VR/AR toy we have seen and our Toy of the Show.
A soft, cuddly giraffe that glows and play soft music just cannot be beat for an infant to cling to for bedtime and naptime. Soon baby will learn that when he or she squeezes the toy, it will then reward it with music and a soft glow. This will develop its cognitive and motor skills to recreate the effect when it wants. When squeezed, the music plays for up to 15 minutes at a time, giving baby plenty of time to fall off to sleep before it stops playing.
The toy measures 8.5" and is designed in vivid colors and patterns that will help your baby to focus. Crisp textures and sounds such as grasping loops, squeakers, and crinkle paper will teach baby to touch and grasp. There is also a self-discovery mirror that will have your baby starting at the image that looks back at them. It also has a funny looking face on it which babies are hardwired to recognize and relate to from birth. This soft toy can be attached to the crib to keep baby stimulate as well as used when traveling in a stroller or car seat.
Last year, I shared several of our favorite toys for babies along with toys for boys ages 5-7.  Since Little Sister (21 months) is now officially considered a toddler. I thought I would share some of our favorite toys for toddlers!  Many of these we currently have, a few we will be purchasing this year, and some we have enjoyed at other locations such as friends’ houses or church!
So you want to be a raptor trainer? It’s not going to be easy but if you have the patience and discipline to learn, it’s a whole lot of fun! Say hello to Mattel’s newest robot – Alpha Training Blue. It’s a fully interactive veloceraptor that you can control and train just like Chris Pratt’s character in the film. This is one advanced toy. In fact, it’s the most complex toy Mattel has ever created. Seven motors provide fluid, realistic animation to the neck and head while also allowing you to walk it around. It’s very responsive to controls and features the same rapor sounds from the movie. Blue loves being petted and she has touch sensors under her jaw and on the top of her nose to bring her to life. Hands-down, it’s the coolest robot toy this year. It’s so fun to play with something so detailed and fluid.

These blocks are amazing and are on our toy gift wish list!  They might look like ordinary wooden blocks…but they stick together because they are magnetic!  The magnets are placed inside the wood, an important safety feature.  The manufacturer says they are appropriate for children 6 months+, but I would still be hesitant to use the smallest cubes with toddlers who still put toys in their mouth.  The only bad thing about these blocks is that they are pretty pricey.  They are extremely well-made, however, and would last for years to come.
Once you open this package and put the rings on the octopus’s tentacles, they may never connect again, but that works out just fine with this toy. Baby may want to spend hours in the tub putting the rings back on, or if she keeps them apart, the rings still make great teething toys. The octopus will engage baby with its bright colors, and with curled tentacles you can expect it will get plenty of teething on as well.
