You can look at your baby’s teething as the process by which his or her very first deciduous teeth break through his or her gums. This usually occurs by the time your baby reaches 6 months old, although it is not uncommon to see babies as young as 3 months and as old as 1 year to have their very first primary, deciduous, baby, or milk tooth. What can be expected is that by 3 years of age, your baby would have already erupted 20 milk or baby teeth. During the first eruption, your baby’s first tooth will most likely appear on the lower front of his or her gums. One to two months later, you can expect the upper front teeth.

Every week I take my kid to a play therapist. My son is great and, because he’s six and also my son, has a hard time expressing his emotions through words. His play therapist is great too but out-of-network and so crazy expensive. Regardless, it’s totally worth it. Play therapy allows my son a way to express himself non-verbally and provides a professional to, to some extent, decode his play. (Like most therapists, she meets separately with us.) But you don’t need to be in a play therapist to offer your kid the ability to work through their shit — or simply express themselves in a more natural way — with toys. You just need the right toys.

This is such sweet idea that we wish we’d have come up with it ourselves. It’s great for the baby who’s just starting to grab onto things and will really love the soft texture of a stuffy. Keep in mind, this should not be the pacifier you let a baby sleep through the night with because of the increased risk of SIDS when anything is in the bed with baby. But for keeping a sleeping baby happy while you’re by his side, this is perfect.

Many, many toys for toddlers are ablaze with buttons, levers, lights, music, etc. Often these toys are marketed as “developmental” because the toy has so many different functions. Unfortunately, this often has the opposite effect for the child. The more a toy does, the less your child has to do. If your child can sit and watch the toy “perform,” then it is likely more entertaining than educational. In addition, these toys can be confusing to a child who is learning cause-and-effect. If a toy randomly starts playing music, or it is unclear which button made the lights start flashing, then your child is not learning which of his actions (the cause) produced the lights and music (the effect). In short, the most useful toys are those that require the most action on the part of a young child. The more children have to use their minds and bodies to make something work, the more they learn.
Big changes start to happen in baby's second month of life—especially when it comes to arm and hand movements. “Babies have a reflex that encourages them to look at their own outstretched hand as they wave and jerk it around like a tiny orchestra conductor," Coley says. As you continue practicing tummy time, baby will begin to hold his head up for very brief periods of bobbing and turning.

“There’s actually been some research looking at kids using blocks with parents and it turns out that building blocks are a really good way to promote early STEM and math skills,” says Lytle. “Think about the language you’re using when you’re building blocks: bigger, smaller, shorter, taller. If you have kids and parents building bridges with blocks together, you’ll start talking about concepts like stability. Even if you don’t actually use the word stability, you’re still talking about complex engineering concepts.” The pastel-hued wooden building blocks in this 14-piece set have built-in magnets, so they won’t fall down as easily as regular blocks. Plus, they’re made in Honduras, with the goal of creating living-wage jobs for Tegucigalpa residents.

Another example of what Dr. Cornett calls “real life” toys, this food encourages kids to go shopping and to cook. We’re big fans of the Learning Resources Farmer’s Market Color Sorting Set which, unlike many of the other options, is not just french fries (high in sodium and easily lost) and cheeseburgers. In addition, it can do double duty as a color sorting tool.

So books are a great distraction while you’re out shopping or while you’re doing the dishes. The best part of these books is how small they are – a few of these guys will fit in the diaper bag easily! And because they come in a pack that makes them less than a dollar each, losing one or two here and there won’t break your heart. Because that adorable little baby is going to throw everything out of the stroller anyway!

When finding the proper teething relief for our babies, there are some significant health factors we must consider. For example, we understand our teeth lie in our mouths, which is the ultimate route to our digestion and immune systems. This means anything we put in our mouths will eventually find its way into our bloodstream. With this knowledge, it has become pertinent in recent years to combine efficiency and safety in order to give our children items with which to play, chew or eat that won’t in the future cause them bodily harm. Some products on this list do contain a few unavoidable toxins, so it is recommended that you do your own research and pay close attention to each product individually. However, we’ve taken extra care to ensure these toys are some of the safest for use in your household.

While newborns are notorious for packing their schedules with only a handful of activities—namely sleeping, eating, and pooping—at around three months you will start to notice a marked change in your baby. At around that time babies tend to spend a bit more time awake, they notice more about their surroundings, they’re better able to hold things in their hands, and you might even hear those first coos and giggles.

When it comes to playing with babies, how much your child gets out of it is directly related to how much time and effort you put into it. "Baby's development doesn't happen in a vacuum," says Rachel Coley, a pediatric occupational therapist who blogs at Can Do Kiddo. "A big part of baby hitting key milestones and gaining skills has to do with the materials, experiences and opportunities to practice that baby receives. By choosing toys and activities that match what your little one is ready to work on, you make the most of your infant's awake times and set the stage for important early learning."

This is a great gift idea for a toddler that will serve a long time. It has two parts: the walker and removable interactive panel. The latter is for early learning, it has two colorful spinning rollers, five piano keys which play music, three shape sorters and three buttons that light-up. All of these features are awesome for developing motor skills and discover new things like animals, colors, shapes and numbers.
